Just in case you're getting even the slightest bit worried about this sudden barrage of smears against Obama about Ayers and whoever else, I want you to remember three things:
- Hillary Clinton also used these kinds of attacks on Obama near the end of their primary race. Attacks like these lose effectiveness every time they're used.
- Clinton was losing by a LOT less (comparatively speaking) when she used the attacks than McCain is now.
- Clinton lost.
Depending on which candidate you support, this is either the funniest or the saddest part: these kinds of attacks, as bad as they might be from a purely strategic standpoint, are very likely McCain's best shot at making a comeback. It's kind of like saying that killing yourself is the best way to avoid getting a parking ticket.
